2016 U.S. 83 in Leakey is First RCC Federal Highway built in U.S.
In October 2016, TxDOT constructed the first U.S. Highway (US 83) using roller-compacted concrete pavement. The construction consisted of mainlanes and shoulders on US 83 and RR 337, including the intersection. The RCC for the 50,000 square yard project was placed in 3 weeks, under full traffic, including significant heavy truck traffic from aggegrate quarries to the South. The RCC was placed on an in-place cement-stabilized reclaimed base that provided a traffic surface while the RCC was placed in adjacent lanes. Most of the RCC pavement was opened to traffic after only a few days; some was opened in 24 hours.
