Why build concrete trails? It may be a surprise to you, but concrete trails are not necessarily more expensive. Concrete offers long-term durability and with proper design and quality construction methods, concrete will provide longevity and will require minimal maintenance. Concrete trails reflect the sun and are cooler and require less lighting than other trail surfaces. Steel is not needed if the joint spacing recommendations are followed properly. To reduce on any potential maintenance costs, a proper subgrade preparation and proper joint placement is recommended as well as planning for future maintenance activities by conducting annual pavement reviews and maintenance budget allocations.
